Eco-whisky or what?

What do you think about some of the new initiatives introduced by The Macallan team earlier this year?

First they started a unique partnership with the French crystal company Lalique. High-priced whisky in a fancy crystal decanter. Although you get some special whisky, but you pay the price for the concept and the pack, but not for the whisky.

Then they launched The Macallan Estate Oak, the first ever eco-whisky. For each bottle of whisky sold, there will be an oak tree planted at the Macallan estate to help the environment. Is it a relevant message for you? Would you buy a bottle of whisky to help the environment?

Why I am writing all these? Because I'm working in the whisky industry dealing with marketing, brand building, brand communication, but these kind of new releases are a wee bit too much "marketing ideas" for me.

What do you think?

  • Oops -

That "Water of Life" note is incorrect. charity:water is correct. See the link below.

Also the decanter toured cities around the world, not just the states.

  • The 64 YO Macallan whisky in the Lalique decanter was auctioned this past weekend for $460,000. That money plus the proceeds of a tour that the decanter made across the USA (about $150,000) will be donated to Water of Life charity.

That’s $600k raised in total for charity:water – 120 wells and 30,000 people will benefit with clean drinking water.

  • I agree too. Macallan left it's famous sherry casks, which made the whisky so famous. Now they have a new oak series which they present as an inovation, but in reality... They left the golden standard. I don't drink a package, I drink the contents of a bottle.

  • I think your right. Especialy Macallan should spend his money on Spanish oak casks instend of expensive decanter. I want quality in the bottle, not in the package!
